In 1994, friends and artists, Beth Klein and Roxane Clark, found themselves at a crossroad in their lives.
Beth, a jewelry designer, and Roxane, a mixed media artist, wanted to create an outlet to showcase their own wares, but realized the Denton area needed a place to find handcrafted gifts and treasures from around the world that were unique, but also affordable. Teaming their efforts, they opened their new business, Sleeping Lizzards – named after a musing by Beth’s then 3-year-old daughter.
Sleeping Lizzards located in Denton, TX on the corner of Elm Street and Parkway just north of the historic Denton Square, is a funky gift shop/gallery with a flair for cleverness – appealing to customers of all ages. One-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, multi-textured fibers arts, home décor items, hand-made greeting cards, and clothing, back dropped against wafting home scents and colorful displays provide an all-sensory shopping experience, perfect for finding any special gift.
The renovated historic 3,700-square-foot building, which may have been used as a jail and was built in the early 1900's, houses street-front gallery space fronting Beth and Roxane’s studio, where their imaginations are the only limits for Beth’s silver-smithed wearable art pieces and Roxane’s whimsical mixed media creations. When the duo isn’t working in their studio, they’re searching gift markets across the country for other talented artists’ lines, such as custom handcrafted furniture, Sticks, and continually updating their inventory.
It’s no wonder the award-winning Sleeping Lizzards has outgrown two locations since 1993 building a following of shoppers who travel from near and far. They know that in the heart of Denton, a wonderous emporium awaits - filled with imagination, curiosity and creativity. Join the experience and make Sleeping Lizzards your gift shopping destination.
